Composing and Arranging

From a young age, in musicianship classes at Trinity College of Music JD, Pauline Starkey showed great interest in composition and enjoyed pursuing it as a subject alongside performance elements, throughout her music education. Pauline continues to compose in her spare time and has exciting new projects on the horizon. Compositions over the years include solo works for all three of her instruments and string/piano duos, trios and quartets. Pauline is currently compiling a suite of short solo and duet pieces for the violin and/or viola, suitable for intermediate to advanced players.

In recent years, Pauline seized the opportunity to perform some of her works in front of respected and renowned violin, viola and piano professors (from conservatoires in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow), in order to test them out and gain some feedback. Each gave highly positive remarks, suggesting she should publish her material. One professor even offered to publicise her works by performing them himself. Pauline hopes that once available to the public, her compositions may someday be incorporated into recitals and exam syllabuses. She is especially keen to promote her viola pieces, as solo repertoire is still unfortunately limited in this field. Pauline is passionate about both of her stringed instruments but due to the nature of the violin's popularity and dominance in the field over the centuries, she wishes to demonstrate the beautiful timbre of the viola in particular and the range of its possibilities! She hopes that through her compositions she may entice more people to learn or appreciate the viola and to explore what it has to offer.

Pauline also has a passion of arranging music for her one-to-one lessons and church performances. She creates tailor-made arrangements for her varied students who are inbetween stages or have specified personal goals they wish to achieve. It is also a great tool to encourage them -whether child or adult- to explore chamber music, even as novices. Pauline understands music is there for sharing and to essentially have fun so she often plays alongside her students to help them develop their musicianship skills and confidence.

Band/Studio work

Composing has been able to play more of a role in Pauline's performing life since she began collaborating and recording with London-based bands in 2009. This marked the start of a new and exciting era for her, venturing out from classical roots into unexplored territory! This included being part of a unique band duo AMPS, with Antony Murphy on guitar and vocals. Their compositions would often keep people guessing as Pauline would swap between the violin and viola between pieces and even within some of them. They enjoyed a very individual style, with a mixture of classical and experimental folk rock influences. Together they created over 20 works and gave private performances of each at London studios - all rapturously received, with calls for more collaborations.

AMPS recorded some of their duo band pieces at Abbot Street Studios, London.

They have produced CD recordings of firm favourites which best showcase their work:

Forever Free (violin and guitar)

Last Night (viola, guitar and vocals)

New Horizon (violin and guitar)
